A 36-year-old man was shot and killed early Thursday while he was taking pictures of the snow with his family in far northeast Dallas, police said.

The motive is still a mystery to police, who haven’t caught anyone yet.

Ahmed Al-Jumaili was shot around 12:30 a.m. while he was outside in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 9900 block of Walnut Street near Audelia Road, said Dallas police spokeswoman Monica Cordova.

Al-Jumaili was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Maj. Jeff Cotner of the crimes against persons division said witnesses saw two men heading in opposite directions casually walk by, and then come back and shoot Al-Jumaili.

“This is a very initial reporting,” Cotner said. “But the initial reporting is ‘hey, we’re just enjoying the snowfall. We’re just outside taking photos of the snowfall.’”

The family retreated to their apartment.

Investigators are trying to figure out why Al-Jumaili was shot. And with no clear motive, Cotner said police haven’t ruled out a hate crime because Al-Jumaili is Middle Eastern.

“That’s certainly something we haven’t excluded, but right now we’re just looking for anything,” Cotner said.
