Mawlawi Abdul Basir Haqqani, Head of Kabul Ulema Council, was assassinated in the city by unknown gunmen on Saturday, officials confirmed.

Gul Ahmad Sediqi, Deputy Head of Kabul Ulema Council confirmed the incident and said that Mr. Haqqani was shot dead yesterday afternoon in Kabul’s PD7.

According to the Interior Ministry Spokesman Najib Danish, Mr. Haqqani was killed at around 01:40 pm local time.

A suspect was arrested in connection to the incident and that investigation is underway in this regard.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

This comes after he blamed the Afghan Intelligence (NDS) at an interview given to Mashal TV, for the Kabul blast that killed 67 Muslims including Ulema in Mawlid event last week.

In his interview, he said the government secret agency is responsible for this attack which was to cause friction and war between groups/sects. He also said the Taliban didn’t do it.
