A Muslim woman was subject to vile racist abuse while playing with her 1-year-old daughter in a Cambridge playground.

Samrah Sehar was verbally abused by a gang of young white men at the play park off Mill Road, close to the junction with East Road.

Some half a dozen youngsters gathered at the playground’s fence and initially laughed at Mrs Sehar before launching into a series of racist assaults.

The gang even shouted at Mrs Sehar to ask whether she and her young daughter were going to join terrorist group ISIS.

Mrs Sehar, who wears a hijab, said: “They were clapping and hooting like a bunch of insane morons, and then stooped even lower by verbally attacking my baby daughter.

“It’s not natural for me to stay quiet in these situations, but my daughter was with me, and I was genuinely scared they might resort to physical violence.

“What saddens me most is there were two other parents in the park with their 8-9-year-old children, witnessing the whole ordeal, and many passers by who paused at the commotion, and no-one said even a single word in my and my daughter’s defence.”

She has not reported the issue to the police, but has made a complaint to Cambridge City Council.

Cllr Shapour Meftah is a city councillor and owns a shop on Mill Road.

He was contacted by Mrs Sehar’s husband after the incident, and believes the playground is rife with anti-social behaviour and racist attitudes.

“Sometimes these kids, they go there and say this and that, but what can we do – by the time somebody gets involved, they’ve disappeared, and there’s nothing we can do about it,” he said.

“I am surprised nobody did anything about it.”

The incident happened at around 4pm on Saturday, March 14.
